Snapdragons are an old fashioned cool season flower; also known as dragon flowers and are excellent cut flowers! Antirrhinum is a genus of plants commonly known as dragon flowers, snapdragons and dog flower because of the flowers' resemble the face of a dragon that opens and closes its mouth when laterally squeezed.

Snapdragons are a beautiful, cottage garden favorite ranging in colour from the palest to the deepest pinks, coral, blood red, and yellow.  Snapdragons make for excellent cutting flowers sturdy upright stems have long lasting uniform blooms, and add a brilliant burst of color. Great in a border, cottage garden or in large deep containers with good drainage.

Snapdragons are short-lived perennials typically grown as an annual. Excellent choice for a spring or fall garden. On sunny days snapdragons release 4 X more fragrance that is highly attractant to bees and pollinators.

  • Best grown in moderately fertile soil with consistent watering, especially in hot weather. 
  • Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost date: snapdragon seeds are so small, sow seeds by sprinkling them across the soil surface, and then either sprinkle a light layer of soil or vermiculite over the top, or simply press down to embed the seeds into the soil. Water from below (place tray in water source and allow to soak in then remove) Transplant after risk of frost has passed.
  • Seeds should sprout in 10-21 days.
  • Spacing: 10-12 in apart.
  • OR direct sow outdoors after risk of frost has passed by making small holes and covering lightly; this method is not recommended.
