Perennial Vine – Purple Passion Flower (Passiflora incarnata) – Non-GMO – Organically Grown – Flower
No – Perennial
Purple Passion Flower is a vigorous perennial flowering vine. The above-ground growth may die back during cold weather and emerge again from its established root system when warm conditions return.
Full Sun to Partial Sun
Purple Passion Flower performs best in full sun, although it can tolerate some partial shade. More sunlight generally encourages stronger flowering.
Full Description
Purple Passion Flower (Passiflora incarnata) is an extraordinary perennial climbing vine with some of the most intricate flowers found in the garden.
Its spectacular blooms feature white to pale lavender petals surrounded by a dramatic crown of wavy purple, lavender and white filaments. The complex flowers look almost otherworldly and create a breathtaking display throughout the warm growing season.
Also commonly known as Maypop, this fast-growing vine produces curling tendrils that naturally climb fences, trellises, arbours and other supports.
Established vines can grow approximately 10–20+ feet in a season under favourable conditions.
The spectacular flowers are highly attractive to pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Passionflower is particularly valuable as a host plant for the caterpillars of several butterfly species.
After successful pollination, the flowers can develop into oval green fruits that ripen toward yellowish-green. Ripe Passiflora incarnata fruit contains an aromatic edible pulp.
Purple Passion Flower makes a spectacular choice for pollinator gardens, cottage gardens, edible landscapes and anywhere a fast-growing flowering vine can be given room to climb.
Growing Purple Passion Flower from Seed
Passionflower seed can be slow and irregular to germinate. Patience is important.
The hard seed coat naturally protects the seed and can delay water absorption and germination.
Preparing the Seeds
Before sowing, gently scarify the seed coat.
Lightly rub one area of each seed with fine sandpaper or carefully nick the outer seed coat. The goal is simply to weaken the hard outer coating without damaging the interior of the seed.
After scarifying, soak seeds in warm water for approximately 24 hours.
Seeds that remain floating can still be planted.
Starting Indoors
Sow seeds approximately ¼–½ inch deep in a moist, well-draining seed-starting mix.
Keep the growing medium warm, ideally around 21–29°C (70–85°F).
Maintain consistent moisture without allowing the growing medium to become waterlogged.
Provide bright light once seedlings emerge.
Passionflower germination can be unpredictable. Some seeds may germinate within several weeks, while others can take considerably longer.
Do not discard the seed tray simply because germination is not immediate.
Once seedlings are well established, transplant them into individual containers.
Gradually harden young plants before moving them permanently outdoors.
Outdoor Sowing
Seeds can also be sown outdoors in fall, allowing natural winter conditions to help condition the seeds before spring.
Choose a permanent location carefully because established Passiflora incarnata can spread through underground growth.
Provide a trellis, fence, arbour or other climbing support.
Stratification:
Cold stratification can be beneficial but is not always essential.
For controlled indoor propagation, scarification and soaking are particularly useful because passionflower seeds possess a hard outer seed coat.
For additional dormancy treatment, seeds may be given approximately 30–60 days of cold, moist stratification before being moved into warm germination conditions.
Alternatively, seeds can be fall-sown outdoors and allowed to experience natural seasonal temperature changes.
For best results:
Scarify → Soak 24 hours → Cold-moist stratify 30–60 days → Sow warm.
Germination may still be irregular, so patience is essential.
Soil
Purple Passion Flower prefers:
• Fertile soil
• Well-drained soil
• Moderate, consistent moisture
• Soil enriched with organic matter
Established plants can tolerate periods of drier conditions, but regular moisture encourages lush growth and flowering.
Avoid consistently waterlogged soil.
Climbing Support
Purple Passion Flower is a climbing vine with tendrils.
Provide a:
• Trellis
• Fence
• Arbour
• Pergola
• Garden structure
The tendrils naturally wrap around available supports as the vine grows.
Medicinal Properties & Traditional Uses
Passiflora incarnata has a long history of traditional herbal use.
The aerial portions of the plant, particularly leaves and stems, have traditionally been prepared as herbal teas and extracts.
Passionflower has historically been used in herbal traditions for relaxation, restlessness and supporting sleep.
Modern scientific research has investigated Passiflora incarnata and its naturally occurring plant compounds in relation to anxiety, relaxation and sleep, although the available evidence varies and should not be interpreted as proof that the plant can treat a medical condition.
Passionflower contains naturally occurring phytochemicals including flavonoids and other bioactive plant compounds.
