Pale Corydalis , also known as Rock Harlequin, is a lacy biennial with delicate and compound leaves that are divided into many lobes. During its first summer a basal rosette is produced, but in its second year the plant sends up many branched stems, each tipped with bleeding heart light to dark pink tubular flowers with bright yellow tips that are specialized for pollination by insects, generally bees. Foliage is attractive greenish-blue leaves

Corydalis species, provide a critical nectar source for foragers early in the growing season. This is an attractive annual native for rocky, shallow soil sites and cooler climates. 

  • If planting seed late spring or early summer they can be biennial. 
  • With natural seed dispersal, fall or early spring plantings are annual.
  • Full sun ( not extreme heat) to part shade
  • Prefers well draining soil
  • Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks prior to last frost. Fill a seedling tray with moistened potting mix. Place seeds on the surface of the mix. Moisten the soil well, and cover the pot with a clear lid or plastic wrap. Keep soil consistently moist and provide darkness for germination.
  • Germination can be irregular and may take several weeks to months.
  • Once sprouted, transplant outdoors when the soil warms up and seedlings are strong enough to handle
  • in nature, the seeds are dispersed by ants; harvest when ripe to save seeds or allow to self seed.
