Description
New Zealand Flax (Phormium) is a bold, ornamental perennial prized for its long, upright, sword-shaped leaves. This Red & Green mix produces beautiful foliage in varying shades of deep red, bronze, burgundy and green, creating dramatic colour and texture in the garden.
Its sculptural growth habit makes it an incredible statement plant for garden beds, borders, large containers and landscape designs. As plants mature, their tall, arching foliage creates movement and year-round visual interest.
Established plants may also produce tall flower stalks bearing tubular flowers that are attractive to pollinators and nectar-feeding birds.
New Zealand Flax is native to New Zealand and has traditionally been valued for its exceptionally strong fibrous leaves as well as its ornamental beauty.
In colder Canadian climates, plants can be grown in large containers and protected indoors during winter, as prolonged hard freezes can damage or kill the plant.
Growing New Zealand Flax From Seed
For best results, sow seeds indoors in a moist, well-draining seed-starting mix.
