Monkey Tree, also known as Monkey Puzzle Tree, is a distinctive evergreen prized for its unusual, architectural shape and striking, overlapping, scale-like foliage. Native to Chile and Argentina, this long-lived tree makes a dramatic statement in the landscape and can eventually become a magnificent specimen tree.

Growing From Seed

Monkey Tree is relatively slow-growing when young, but well worth the patience. Seeds are best sown fresh, as viability decreases with age.

Stratification: Cold stratification is recommended to improve germination. Place seeds in a slightly moist growing medium and refrigerate for approximately 4–6 weeks before planting.

After stratification, sow seeds approximately ½–1 inch (1–2.5 cm) deep in a well-draining seed-starting mix. Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Place in a bright location with temperatures around 18–24°C (65–75°F).

Germination can be irregular and may take several weeks. Once seedlings emerge, provide plenty of light and protect young plants from extreme heat, drought and severe frost.

Transplant outdoors once plants are well established and the risk of severe frost has passed. Choose a permanent location carefully, as Monkey Trees eventually become large and are not easily moved once established.

Growing Tip: Patience is key with Araucaria araucana. Young plants grow slowly while developing their distinctive structure, but mature trees can live for many decades.
