Lupins are fantastic architectural plants and make excellent additions to cottage gardens, borders and meadows. Extremely easy to grow and deer resistant.

  • Prefers sunny site
  • Well draining soil
  • Lupine seeds can be direct sown in autumn where winters are mild.
  • Allow plant to reseed itself or remove brown dry pods and scatter where you want.
  • OR start indoors 6 weeks before the last frost date; scarify seeds by chipping, or soak in water for 24 hours prior to sowing.
  • Sow 1/8″ deep, and maintain a coolish soil temperature of 12-18°C (55-65°F). Seeds should germinate in 14-60 days.
  • Very showy display between late spring to mid summer
  • Foliage is also decorative; resembles palm leaves with 7-10 segments each
  • Perennial shrubs which start into growth after the last frosts, produce their first flush of flowers in late May / June and can continue flowering into early August if dead-headed correctly.
  • Cut the plant to the base in fall
  • Lupin beans can be eaten raw or cooked. In south america they're often soaked in salt and eaten raw as a snack or roasted and eaten like peanuts
  • Lupin flour has been shown to lower blood pressure and insulin sensitivity; lupins are high in protein and fiber
  • Attracts bees butterflies and hummingbirds!
