Full description

Spanish Lavender (Lavandula stoechas) is a highly ornamental lavender species known for its distinctive pineapple-shaped flower heads topped with showy purple “rabbit ear” bracts. Unlike English lavender, Spanish lavender thrives in warmer, drier conditions and is prized for its long bloom period, strong fragrance, and striking appearance in gardens, containers, and pollinator plantings. The aromatic foliage is gray-green and evergreen in mild climates. Flowers are attractive to bees and beneficial insects and are commonly used fresh or dried for decorative purposes.

Spanish lavender has traditional medicinal and aromatic uses, primarily for relaxation and mood support. Its essential oils have been used in aromatherapy, though it is generally less commonly used medicinally than English lavender.

Full growing information from seed:

  • Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before transplanting outside
  • Use a well-draining seed-starting mix
  • Lightly press seeds into the soil surface; do not bury deeply
  • Seeds require light to germinate
  • Keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged
  • Ideal germination temperature: warm conditions
  • Germination can be slow and irregular (14–30+ days)
  • Once seedlings have several true leaves, transplant into individual pots
  • Harden off seedlings before planting outdoors
  • Plant in very well-draining soil
  • Avoid rich or overly fertile soil, which reduces flowering
  • Water sparingly once established
  • Trim lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage reblooming

Not required, but a short cold stratification (2–4 weeks in the refrigerator) can improve germination rates.
