Inula – Giant Inula (Inula magnifica) Non-GMO – Organically Grown – Flower

Perennial

Prefers full sun (can tolerate light partial shade)

Description:

Inula magnifica, commonly called Giant Inula or Giant Fleabane, is a bold, architectural perennial grown for its large, lush foliage and tall midsummer flower spikes. The bright golden-yellow flowers feature narrow, fringed petals that draw in bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. It thrives in Canada’s temperate conditions when planted in moist, fertile soil with plenty of sunlight. Its impressive height and dramatic leaves make it ideal for borders, naturalized areas, and near ponds or damp garden edges.

Medicinal Properties:

This species is not typically used medicinally. Although its relative Inula helenium (elecampane) is well known in herbal medicine, Inula magnifica has no established or traditional medicinal use and should not be taken internally.

Full Growing Information From Seed:

  • Start seeds indoors in early spring, as Canada’s outdoor soil takes longer to warm.
  • Use a well-draining seed-starting mix; surface-sow the seeds (they need light to germinate).
  • Mist gently to keep the surface evenly moist.
  • Keep seedlings at 18–21°C (65–70°F).
  • Germination usually occurs in 14–28 days.
  • Transplant seedlings into individual pots once they have several true leaves.
  • Harden off gradually for 7–10 days before planting outdoors.
  • Plant outside once danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed.
  • Choose a site with full sun and moist, rich, well-draining soil.
  • Water regularly, especially during the first growing season.
  • Mulch to help retain moisture in Canadian summer conditions.
  • Flowering typically begins in the second or third year.

Stratification:

  • Not mandatory, but optional cold stratification improves germination, especially helpful in Canadian climates.
  • To stratify:
    • Place seeds on a moist (not soaked) paper towel or in moist sand/vermiculite.
    • Seal in a plastic bag.
    • Refrigerate for 2–4 weeks.
    • After stratification, sow as normal indoors.
  • Seeds: 20
