Honeywort - Cerinthe (Cerinthe major Purpurascens) Honey Wort Blue Shrimp Waxflower Heirloom

Height: 1- 3 ft

Width: 1-2 ft

Absolutely Fascinating! Honeywort, or Cerinthe Blue Shrimp plant, is also known as Waxflower and related to borage. This is one of the most beautiful plants we have grown! Absolutely stunning!!! Plant has branching and striking bracts with green/blue coloration that deepens into a darker blue at night; small pink florets at the tip.

  • Annual in colder climates and half hardy biennial (prolific self seeders) in warmer climates
  • full sun
  • Well draining soil
  • Start Cerinthe seeds indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost; sow in a good quality compost at a depth of 1.5 mm (1/16"), and cover with a light sprinkling of vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 18-20 C (64-68 F) or seal it inside a polythene bag. Keep the soil damp but not wet.
  • Or direct sow in an area with full to part sun in well-draining soil. Soak seeds overnight, then direct-sow after the last frost date or raise as transplants 6 to 8 weeks before transplanting out after threat of frost has passed.
  • Seed Harvesting: this plant is an amazing self seeder. Check plant bracts around mid July for ripened seeds inside leafy pods; remove black mature seeds and set aside to dry then store in moisture free envelopes. Sow as per instructions above.
  • Absolute stunning specimen plant as a stand alone feature or as a low hedge. A must have!
  • blooms spring to fall
  • Seed Count: 12 seeds; you will have loads of seeds from one plant and will not have to buy seeds again!
