Full Description

Hebe ‘Purple Patti’ is a compact, ornamental evergreen shrub valued for its neat form, glossy green foliage, and striking spikes of rich purple flowers. Blooming primarily in summer and often extending into early fall, it brings long-lasting color and structure to borders, rock gardens, containers, and coastal plantings. Its tidy, rounded habit makes it especially useful as a low hedge or accent plant. The flowers are highly attractive to bees and butterflies, adding pollinator value alongside its strong visual appeal.

Full Growing Information from Seed

  • Start seeds indoors in late winter to early spring. Sow on the surface of a fine, well-draining seed-starting mix and press lightly—do not cover, as light can aid germination. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and maintain a cool to moderate temperature around 15–20°C (59–68°F).
  • Germination is slow and irregular, often taking 4–8 weeks or longer. Once seedlings emerge, provide bright indirect light and good air circulation to prevent damping off. Transplant carefully when large enough to handle, as young Hebe plants are delicate.
  • Before planting outdoors, harden off gradually. Space plants to allow airflow and maintain their natural compact shape. Light pruning after flowering encourages bushiness and better blooming the following season.

Medicinal Properties:

Hebe species are not known for significant medicinal use and are primarily ornamental. There are no widely recognized therapeutic applications, and it is not used in modern herbal medicine. Its value is horticultural, especially for landscaping and pollinator support.

Stratification

Light cold stratification recommended (2–4 weeks of moist chilling can improve germination consistency, though not always required)
