Gotu Kola – (Centella asiatica) Non-GMO – Organically Grown – Herb
Growth Habit: Gotu Kola is a low-growing, creeping perennial herb with small, fan-shaped green leaves and tiny, inconspicuous pinkish flowers. It spreads via stolons, forming a dense mat over time.
Growing Instructions:
Gotu kola is a warm-loving, moisture-loving perennial that can be started indoors or sown outdoors in warm conditions.
Starting Indoors:
Start seeds 8–10 weeks before last frost. Soak seeds 12–24 hours before planting. Surface sow on moist, well-draining seed-starting mix and gently press into the soil—do not cover, as light is needed for germination. Keep soil consistently moist and warm (70–80°F). Germination is slow and uneven, taking 2–6 weeks. Transplant outdoors after all danger of frost has passed and nights remain above 60°F.
Direct Sowing Outdoors:
Direct sow only in warm weather once soil temperatures reach at least 65°F. Surface sow seeds and press lightly into moist soil. Keep soil constantly moist during germination, which may take 3–6 weeks.
Growing Conditions:
Plant in partial shade to full sun (afternoon shade in hot climates). Prefers rich, fertile soil that stays consistently moist. Gotu kola spreads by runners and makes a low groundcover; space plants 8–12 inches apart or grow in containers to control spread.
Cultivation Instructions:
• Soil: Prefers moist, well-draining, sandy, or loamy soil rich in organic matter.
• Light: Thrives in partial shade but can tolerate full sun with sufficient moisture.
• Watering: Requires consistently moist soil; do not allow it to dry out completely.
• Spacing: Plant 12–18 inches apart to allow for spreading growth.
• Fertilization: Benefits from occasional feeding with organic compost or diluted liquid fertilizer.
• Container Growth: Can be grown in pots with rich, well-draining soil and regular watering.
Stratification & Germination:
• Stratification: Seeds benefit from cold stratification for 3–4 weeks before sowing.
• Germination: Sow seeds on the surface of moist soil, pressing them lightly without covering them completely, as they require light to germinate. Keep soil consistently damp and maintain temperatures around 70°F (21°C). Germination may take 3–6 weeks.
Gotu Kola is valued for its medicinal properties and is traditionally used in herbal medicine for cognitive support, skin health, and circulation improvement.
