Annual (in colder climates) or tender perennial

Height: 18–36 inches (45–90 cm).

Bloom Time: Summer to early frost.

Flower Color: Purple and red shades with papery, straw-like bracts.

Soil Requirements: Well-draining soil with a pH of 5.5–6.5.

Sun Exposure: Full sun.

Water Needs: Moderate; allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.

Uses: Excellent for fresh and dried flower arrangements, pollinator gardens, and borders.

Growing Instructions

1. Sowing Indoors (Recommended):

Start seeds 6–8 weeks before the last frost date.

Use seed-starting mix in trays or pots.

Lightly press seeds into the soil surface but do not cover, as light aids germination.

Keep the soil moist but not soggy.

Maintain a temperature of 65–75°F (18–24°C).

2. Transplanting:

Transplant seedlings outdoors once they have 2–3 sets of true leaves and all risk of frost has passed.

Space plants 10–12 inches apart.

3. Direct Sowing (Optional):

Sow seeds directly in the garden after the last frost.

Lightly press seeds into the soil surface without covering.

4. Care:

Water regularly but avoid overwatering.

Fertilize monthly with a balanced flower fertilizer.

Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continuous flowering.

Seed Stratification Requirements

Strawflowers do not require stratification. They germinate readily under warm temperatures and light exposure.

Harvesting for Dried Flowers

Cut blooms just as they begin to open for best drying results.

Hang stems upside down in a cool, dry, and dark place to preserve color and texture.

Fun Fact: Strawflowers’ bracts (which look like petals) feel like paper and retain their vibrant colors even after drying, making them a popular choice for everlasting arrangements.
