Full description

Purple Sheen Sea Holly (Eryngium leavenworthii) is a striking and unusual flowering plant known for its intense purple-blue colouring and bold, thistle-like appearance. Unlike many other sea hollies, this species features vivid stems, bracts, and cone-shaped flower heads all washed in rich metallic purple tones, creating a dramatic and eye-catching display in the garden.

Native to open prairies and dry grasslands, this variety brings a wild, naturalistic feel to plantings and is perfect for pollinator gardens, xeriscaping, and meadow-style landscapes. The spiky blooms are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Its upright, branching growth habit adds structure and texture, while its drought tolerance makes it an excellent low-maintenance choice for sunny locations.

The long-lasting blooms are also excellent for fresh and dried floral arrangements, retaining their colour and form well after harvest. Purple Sheen Sea Holly adds bold colour and architectural interest to any garden setting.

Full Growing information from seed:

Eryngium leavenworthii is best grown from seed sown directly outdoors, though it can also be started indoors with care.

To direct sow:

  • Sow seeds outdoors in fall for natural stratification, or in early spring after pre-treatment
  • Lightly press seeds into the soil surface or cover very lightly (no more than 0.5 cm deep)
  • Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil
  • Keep soil lightly moist until germination

To start indoors:

  • Cold stratify seeds for 2–4 weeks in a moist medium in the refrigerator
  • After stratification, sow seeds in a well-draining seed-starting mix and lightly cover
  • Maintain temperatures around 18–22°C (65–72°F)
  • Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy
  • Germination typically occurs within 14–30 days, though it may be irregular

Transplant seedlings carefully, as plants develop a taproot and do not tolerate disturbance well. Space plants approximately 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart.

This species prefers well-drained, sandy or poor soils and thrives in hot, dry conditions. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering. Avoid overly rich soils, which can reduce flowering performance.

Stratification:

Recommended – Cold stratification for 2–4 weeks improves germination rates, or fall sow for natural stratification

Medicinal properties:

Eryngium leavenworthii has limited documented medicinal use compared to other Eryngium species, but related plants in the genus have been traditionally used for their mild diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and expectorant properties.

Historically, Eryngium species have been used to support urinary tract health, aid digestion, and help relieve mild respiratory conditions such as coughs. Some traditions also associate the plant with general tonic and circulatory support.

While Purple Sheen Sea Holly is primarily valued as an ornamental and ecological plant, it shares similar characteristics with other species in the genus and should only be used medicinally with proper knowledge and caution.
