Perennial (deciduous flowering tree)

Height: 15–30 ft tall, spreading 15–25 ft wide

Flowering Dogwood is native to eastern North America. Early spring showy flowers with white or pink bracts (often mistaken for petals) and has bright green summer foliage

Trees offer stunning red to purple fall colour and produces red berries in fall/winter (attracts birds)

Growing Instructions

  • Light: Partial shade to full sun (partial shade preferred in hotter climates)
  • Soil: Moist, well-draining, slightly acidic soil
  • Water: Keep evenly moist, especially while establishing (1–2 years)
  • Spacing: 15–20 feet between trees
  • Planting Time: Spring or fall
  • Care:
    • Mulch to conserve moisture
    • Prune dead or diseased wood in late winter
    • Avoid excessive fertilizer

Stratification

  • Stratification is Required
  • Soak seeds in water for 24 hours
  • Place in moist medium (peat moss or sand)
  • Store in sealed bag in refrigerator (33–41°F / 0.5–5°C)
  • Stratify for 90–120 days
  • After stratification:
    • Sow 1/4 inch deep
    • Keep warm (65–75°F) and bright
    • Germination can take several weeks to month

Medicinal Properties

Bark historically used by Native Americans and settlers

  • Used as a quinine substitute for fever and malaria
  • Bark infusions used as astringent and pain reliever
  • Not recommended for modern internal use without supervision
  • Blooms annually once mature (usually 5–7 years from seed)
