Full description

Cox Pippin Apple is a classic English dessert apple renowned for its exceptional flavour, aromatic sweetness, and balanced tang. The fruit has a golden-yellow skin with rich orange-red blush and firm, crisp flesh. Known for its complex, rich flavor, Cox Pippin is prized for fresh eating, baking, and cider production. Trees are moderately vigorous with an upright-spreading habit and produce abundant spring blossoms that attract pollinators. Seed-grown Cox Pippin trees may not reproduce the exact qualities of the parent fruit but are excellent for rootstock, breeding projects, or orchard establishment. Once mature, these trees are long-lived and highly productive.

Full Growing information from seed:

  • Cold stratify seeds before planting (see stratification section)
  • Sow seeds ¼–½ inch deep in moist, well-draining soil after stratification
  • Maintain consistent moisture without waterlogging
  • Germination may take several weeks and can be irregular
  • Provide full sun for seedlings once they emerge
  • Grow seedlings in containers or protected areas during the first year
  • Transplant young trees once they are established and roots are strong
  • Trees grown from seed can take multiple years to fruit
  • Prune regularly to establish strong branch structure and airflow
  • Cross-pollination with another apple variety improves fruit set once mature

Stratification:

Yes. Cold stratification required.

  • Place seeds in a moist medium (sand, peat, or damp paper towel)
  • Refrigerate for 60–90 days
  • Keep seeds moist and mold-free, checking periodically
  • Plant immediately after stratification is complete

Medicinal properties:

Cox Pippin apples are nutritious and historically valued for digestive and overall health benefits. Rich in dietary fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants, apples support gut health, hydration, and cardiovascular wellness. They are considered a food-based health aid rather than a strong medicinal plant.
