Full Description
Royal Ensign Convolvulus is a striking, low-growing flowering plant prized for its vivid, tricolour blooms in deep crimson, creamy white, and rich golden-yellow centers. Each silky, funnel-shaped flower opens in the sunshine, creating a vibrant carpet of colour that attracts pollinators and brightens garden beds, borders, and containers alike. With its compact, trailing habit and finely textured green foliage, this heirloom favourite is both elegant and easy to grow, making it perfect for beginner and experienced gardeners alike. Blooming continuously throughout the season, it adds a cheerful, wildflower-like charm to any space while requiring minimal maintenance.
Growing Information from Seed:
Sow seeds directly outdoors after the last frost, or start indoors 3–4 weeks prior for earlier blooms. Convolvulus prefers well-drained soil and does best in average to poor soils — overly rich soil may reduce flowering. Lightly scarify seeds (gently nick or soak for 12–24 hours) to improve germination. Sow seeds about 6 mm (¼ inch) deep and space plants 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) apart. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days. Water moderately and avoid overwatering once established, as the plant is somewhat drought tolerant. Deadheading is not necessary but may encourage extended blooming. Ideal for garden edges, rock gardens, and containers.
Stratification:
No cold stratification required. Optional seed soaking or light scarification can improve germination rates.
Medicinal Properties:
While Convolvulus tricolor is primarily grown as an ornamental, some species within the Convolvulus genus have historically been used in traditional herbal practices for mild laxative and anti-inflammatory effects. However, Royal Ensign Convolvulus is not commonly used medicinally and should not be consumed without proper knowledge and guidance. WD
