These stunning bold and architectural beauties can be grown easily from seed, and is an economical way to increase these plants in your garden. Giant Alliums are the largest of the Alliums, and plants produce 8 to 10 inch flower heads! Plants flower in the spring and early summer from May to June.

  • prefers full sun and is drought tolerant
  • requires well draining soil
  • Refrigerate seeds for 3-4 weeks before planting as ornamental onion seeds need a cool period in order to increase germination rates

  • Sow indoors 4 months before planting outside as seeds may take 12 - 16 weeks to germinate

  • Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and firm lightly down.

  • Sow allium seeds on soil surface and cover with approximately ½ inch of seed starting mix.

  • Firm down lightly and then dampen so that the soil is damp, however not overly wet.

  • Cover with a plastic bag or wrap and keep at 15 - 20 degrees C until germination begins.

  • Remove the plastic covering once germination begins.

  • When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant to larger containers.

  • Transplant outside after last frost and keep moist. Prefers well-drained, rich soil in full sun.

  • Plants may take 1-2 years to flower as they need to put energy into bulb development.

  • Foliage of ornamental onion dies back or yellows before flowering begins.
