Full description
Celosia ‘Shimmer’ (Celosia argentea) is a vibrant and ornamental plume-type celosia known for its upright, feathery flower spikes in a radiant mix of colours, including shades of pink, red, gold, and soft coral with a subtle shimmering effect. The blooms rise above lush green foliage, creating a bright and lively display that adds height, texture, and colour to garden beds, borders, and containers.
This variety is especially valued for its uniform growth and long-lasting blooms, making it an excellent choice for cut flowers and dried arrangements. The soft, plume-like flowers retain their colour well when dried and bring a delicate yet bold presence to floral designs. Celosia ‘Shimmer’ thrives in warm conditions and continues to perform beautifully through the heat of summer, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Full Growing information from seed:
Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost, or sow directly outdoors once the soil has warmed and all danger of frost has passed. Celosia seeds require warmth and light to germinate.
To sow indoors:
- Use a fine, well-draining seed-starting mix
- Gently press seeds onto the surface of the soil without covering, as they require light to germinate
- Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged
- Maintain temperatures of 20–25°C (68–77°F)
- Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days
Once seedlings develop several sets of true leaves, transplant into larger containers and harden off before moving outdoors. Space plants approximately 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) apart.
To direct sow:
- Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil
- Lightly press seeds into the soil surface and keep evenly moist until germination
Celosia ‘Shimmer’ prefers fertile, well-drained soil and benefits from regular watering during dry periods. Avoid overly wet conditions. Deadheading spent blooms can encourage prolonged flowering, though plants will continue blooming naturally throughout the season.
