Full description

Celosia Cockscomb Tall (Celosia cristata) is a bold and dramatic flowering plant known for its large, crested blooms that resemble the intricate folds of a rooster’s comb. This tall-growing variety produces vibrant, velvety flower heads in rich shades of red, crimson, orange, and sometimes deep pink, standing prominently above lush green foliage.

The unique, brain-like texture of the blooms makes this celosia a standout feature in garden beds, borders, and floral arrangements. Its taller height adds vertical interest and structure, making it ideal as a focal point or background planting. The blooms are long-lasting and hold their colour exceptionally well, both in the garden and when used as cut or dried flowers. This variety is also attractive to pollinators such as bees, adding ecological value along with its ornamental appeal.

Full Growing information from seed:

Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost, or direct sow outdoors once the soil is warm and all danger of frost has passed. Celosia requires warmth and light for successful germination.

To sow indoors:

  • Use a well-draining, fine seed-starting mix
  • Lightly press seeds onto the surface of the soil without covering, as they require light to germinate
  • Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy
  • Maintain temperatures between 20–25°C (68–77°F)
  • Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days

Once seedlings have developed several sets of true leaves, transplant into larger containers if needed and harden off before moving outdoors. Space plants approximately 25–35 cm (10–14 inches) apart to accommodate their taller growth habit.

To direct sow:

  • Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil
  • Gently press seeds into the soil surface and keep evenly moist until germination

Celosia cristata Tall thrives in fertile, well-drained soil and benefits from consistent watering during dry periods. Avoid overwatering or poorly drained soil. Taller plants may benefit from light staking in windy areas. Deadheading spent blooms can encourage continued flowering throughout the season.

Medicinal properties:

Celosia cristata has been used in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Asian and African cultures. The plant is valued for its astringent, anti-inflammatory, and hemostatic properties. It has been traditionally used to help control bleeding, support digestive health, and manage conditions such as diarrhea and dysentery.

The seeds and flowers have also been used in remedies aimed at supporting eye health and reducing inflammation. Additionally, Celosia cristata is known for its potential antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. While it has a history of traditional use, it is primarily cultivated as an ornamental plant and should be used medicinally with appropriate knowledge and care. F
