Full description

Single Yellow Calendula (Calendula officinalis), also known as pot marigold, is a cheerful and versatile flowering plant prized for its bright, daisy-like blooms in rich golden-yellow tones. The single-petaled flowers feature open centers that are highly attractive to pollinators such as bees and beneficial insects.

This easy-to-grow variety produces continuous blooms from early summer until frost, making it an excellent choice for garden beds, borders, and containers. Its soft green foliage and upright growth habit complement a wide range of companion plants. Calendula is also well known for its edible petals, which can be used to add colour to salads, teas, and culinary dishes.

Highly valued in herbal traditions, Single Yellow Calendula is widely used in natural skincare and healing preparations. The flowers are often harvested and dried for use in salves, oils, and teas, making this plant both ornamental and functional in the garden.

Full Growing information from seed:

Calendula is easy to grow from seed and can be directly sown outdoors or started indoors. It prefers cooler growing conditions and can tolerate light frost.

To direct sow:

  • Sow seeds outdoors in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked, or in fall in milder climates
  • Plant seeds about 1–1.5 cm (½ inch) deep in well-drained soil
  • Space seeds 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) apart
  • Keep soil evenly moist until germination

To start indoors:

  • Sow seeds 4–6 weeks before the last expected frost
  • Plant seeds lightly covered with soil
  • Maintain temperatures of 15–20°C (59–68°F)
  • Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days

Thin seedlings as needed to allow proper airflow. Calendula prefers moderately fertile, well-drained soil and regular watering, but it does not tolerate overly wet conditions. Deadheading spent blooms will encourage continuous flowering throughout the season.
