Full description:
Detroit Golden Beets are a classic heirloom variety prized for their bright golden roots and sweet, earthy flavor. Their smooth, round roots remain tender when mature and have a beautiful golden interior that resists bleeding when cooked. Both roots and greens are edible, making this variety versatile in the kitchen. The greens are rich in vitamins A and K and have mild, nutritious flavor. While not widely used as a medicinal herb, beet roots are known for supporting heart health and liver detoxification due to their natural nitrates and antioxidants.
Full Growing Information from Seed:
- Sow seeds directly outdoors 2–4 weeks before the last frost, or start indoors 3–4 weeks before transplanting.
- Plant seeds ½ inch deep, spacing 1–2 inches apart; thin seedlings to 3–4 inches.
- Rows should be spaced 12–18 inches apart.
- Keep soil consistently moist and well-drained; beets prefer fertile soil enriched with compost.
- Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Thin young plants to allow roots to develop fully.
- Harvest roots at 1.5–3 inches in diameter for best flavor; greens can be harvested when young.
- Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which encourage excessive leaf growth at the expense of roots.
