Full description
Prospera Red Basil is a stunning deep burgundy variety prized for its rich colour, strong flavour, and exceptional disease resistance. This improved Genovese-type basil produces large, glossy leaves in dramatic shades of dark red to purple, making it both a culinary and ornamental standout in the garden. Bred for improved resistance to downy mildew and Fusarium wilt, Prospera Red offers reliable performance and vigorous growth throughout the season. Its bold, classic basil flavour makes it ideal for fresh use in salads, pesto, sauces, and garnishes, while its striking foliage adds beautiful contrast to herb gardens, containers, and mixed beds. Regular harvesting encourages bushy growth and continuous leaf production.

Full Growing information from seed:

  • Start seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost or direct sow outdoors once soil has warmed

  • Use a rich, well-draining seed-starting or garden mix

  • Sow seeds 6 mm deep and lightly cover with soil

  • Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during germination

  • Ideal germination temperature: 20–25°C

  • Germination typically occurs in 5–10 days

  • Provide bright light immediately after sprouting

  • Harden off seedlings before transplanting outdoors

  • Space plants 20–30 cm apart to allow airflow and healthy growth

  • Water regularly, keeping soil evenly moist

  • Pinch the growing tips once plants are 15–20 cm tall to encourage branching

  • Remove flower buds promptly to maintain leaf production and flavour

  • Harvest regularly by cutting stems just above a leaf node

  • Prefers fertile, compost-enriched, well-drained soil

  • Suitable for garden beds, raised beds, and containers
