Full Description:

Golden Aster is a hardy native perennial known for its bright golden-yellow daisy-like flowers that bloom from mid-summer into fall. The plant forms compact clumps with narrow, slightly hairy gray-green leaves that help it tolerate heat, drought, and poor soils. Each stem produces cheerful yellow flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

This resilient wildflower is commonly used in naturalized gardens, prairie plantings, xeriscapes, and wildflower meadows. Golden Aster thrives in dry, sandy, or rocky soils and is valued for its long bloom time and ability to withstand harsh conditions once established.

Plants typically grow 12–24 inches tall and gradually spread to form small clusters over time.

Medicinal Properties:

Golden Aster has limited but traditional medicinal uses among some Indigenous groups. Preparations from the plant were sometimes used as:

  • Anti-inflammatory herbal washes
  • Mild digestive teas
  • Topical applications for minor skin irritations

Modern herbal medicine does not widely use this plant, and medicinal use should be approached cautiously since research is limited.

 Full Growing Information From Seed:

 Sowing Indoors

  1. Start seeds 6–8 weeks before the last frost.
  2. Fill seed trays or small pots with a well-draining seed starting mix.
  3. Scatter seeds on the surface and lightly press them into the soil.
  4. Do not bury deeply — seeds need light to germinate.
  5. Mist gently to moisten the soil.
  6. Keep soil consistently moist but not wet.
  7. Place trays in a bright location with strong light.
  8. Ideal germination temperature is 18–22°C (65–72°F).

Seeds typically germinate in 14–28 days.

When seedlings develop several true leaves, transplant them carefully into larger containers before moving them outdoors.

Direct Sowing Outdoors

  1. Prepare a garden bed with well-drained soil.
  2. Remove weeds and lightly loosen the soil surface.
  3. Scatter seeds and press gently into the soil.
  4. Lightly water to settle seeds.
  5. Keep soil lightly moist until germination occurs.

Thin plants to about 12–18 inches apart once established.

 Growing Conditions:

  • Requires full sun
  • Prefers dry to moderately moist soil
  • Thrives in sandy, gravelly, or rocky soils
  • Very drought tolerant once established
  • Avoid heavy, poorly drained soils

Deadheading can encourage longer blooming, though plants will also self-seed lightly in favorable conditions.

 Stratification:

Not required, but optional cold stratification for 2–4 weeks can improve germination rates and uniformity.

To stratify:

Place seeds in a slightly moist medium in the refrigerator for several weeks before sowing.

Seed count: 25 seeds
