Full description:

Sacred Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) is a stunning aquatic perennial revered for its large, fragrant blooms and graceful, water-floating foliage. Often symbolizing purity and spiritual awakening, this plant holds deep cultural and religious significance in many Eastern traditions. Its flowers can be pink or white, rising majestically above the water on tall stalks, while its round, water-repellent leaves create a striking visual contrast. Beyond its beauty, the lotus also produces edible seeds and rhizomes, and is commonly grown in ponds, water gardens, and containers with still water.

Full Growing information from seed:

  • Scarify seeds before planting by gently nicking or sanding the hard outer shell (be careful not to damage the inner seed)
  • Soak scarified seeds in warm water (86°F / 30°C)
  • Change water daily to prevent mold
  • Germination typically occurs within 5–10 days
  • Once sprouted and about 6 inches tall, transfer seedlings to a container with several inches of loamy soil topped with 2–4 inches of warm water
  • Keep in a sunny location (6–8 hours of full sun daily)
  • Do not plant in a pond or deep container until plant has several strong leaves
  • Fertilize monthly during growing season with aquatic plant fertilizer
  • Protect from frost in colder climates

Stratification:

No cold stratification required – but scarification is essential for germination due to the hard seed coat.

Seed count: 2
