Kiwi - Actinidia deliciosa 'Heirloom Organic' Non-GMO - Organically Grown - Fruiting Vine

Perennial

Full sun to Partial Shade

Full description: The Kiwi 'Heirloom Organic' offers the delightful experience of growing your own delicious and nutritious kiwi fruit. This heirloom, open-pollinated variety produces fuzzy, brown-skinned fruits with vibrant green, tangy-sweet flesh, packed with Vitamin C. A vigorous climbing vine, it adds an attractive, lush canopy to trellises, arbors, or fences. Growing your own organic kiwi means you can enjoy fresh, pesticide-free fruit right from your garden, perfect for eating fresh, adding to smoothies, or making preserves. Note that most kiwi varieties require both male and female plants for successful fruit production.

Full Growing information from seed:

  • Seed Preparation: Kiwi seeds need cold stratification to germinate.

    • Wash seeds thoroughly to remove any fruit pulp, which can inhibit germination.

    • Place seeds on a damp paper towel, fold it, and put it in a sealable plastic bag or airtight container.

    • Store in the refrigerator (at 2-4°C / 35-40°F) for 4-6 weeks. Keep the paper towel consistently moist.

  • When to Plant (after stratification): After stratification, sow seeds indoors in late winter to early spring.

  • Seed Starting:

    • Use a sterile seed-starting mix in trays or small pots.

    • Sow seeds thinly on the surface and lightly cover with a thin layer of soil (about 1/8 inch deep).

    • Keep the soil consistently moist and maintain a temperature of 20-24°C (68-75°F).

    • Germination can be slow and erratic, taking anywhere from a few weeks to several months.

  • Lighting: Provide bright, indirect light for seedlings.

  • Transplanting: When seedlings have developed a few sets of true leaves, carefully transplant them into individual larger pots.

  • Hardening Off: Before planting outdoors, gradually acclimate seedlings to outdoor conditions over 7-10 days.

  • Soil: Prefers well-draining, fertile soil with a slightly acidic pH (6.0-6.5).

  • Sunlight: Requires full sun (at least 6 hours direct sun) for best fruit production, but can tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter climates.

  • Spacing: Plant vines 10-15 feet apart, as they require significant space to grow and spread.

  • Support: Kiwi vines are vigorous climbers and require a sturdy trellis, arbor, or fence for support. Install support structures at planting time.

  • Watering: Water regularly and deeply, especially during dry periods and when fruits are developing. Maintain consistent soil moisture.

  • Fertilizing: Fertilize in early spring with a balanced organic fertilizer, and again in mid-summer.

  • Pruning: Prune kiwi vines in late winter (when dormant) to shape, remove dead or crossing branches, and encourage fruit production. Light summer pruning may also be needed to control growth.

  • Pollination: Most kiwi varieties are dioecious, meaning male and female flowers grow on separate plants. You will need to plant at least one male plant for every 5-9 female plants to ensure pollination and fruit set.

Stratification: Yes, 4-6 weeks of cold stratification.
