Bluebells have bell shaped blue flowers; plants flower in April and May which produce sweet scented violet blue flowers, with strongly recurved tepals and 3-6 long, linear basal leaves. The flowers grow in a single row along one side of the stems; the weight of the flowers cause the stem to curl downwards.
- ancient woodland flowers perfect for underplanting or to 'carpet' open areas in part sun
- recommend direct sow in the fall; seeds will germinate in the spring and begin to form the bulb.
- To start seeds indoors, seeds need stratification to mimic winter. Start this process 10-12 weeks before the last frost date. Seeds need light to germinate so sow them on the surface of the soil and do not cover.Place a plastic bag on top and place whole thing in the fridge for 6 weeks. After six weeks, remover the container from the fridge, remove the bag and germination should happen in 3 weeks. Set out into garden after risk of frost has passed. Generally, seeds will flower until 4 -5 years later after which they will reseed every year.
- divide plants when they become too crowded
