Annual
Dutch Heirloom Squash (C. moschata) is gorgeous, yummy and enormous! Fruits weigh 10 to 20 pounds!! Very easy to prepare since the seeds are all contained neatly in the bottom bulb of the fruit. Simply cut the long curved neck into rings and bake.
Sweet dark orange flesh, excellent for pies or soups. Good keeper. Can be steamed, eaten raw, boiled, baked and used in a great variety of recipes
This is a longer season squash, make sure you know your hardiness zone, and number of frost free days per season.
- Direct seed: 1 in deep. Sow seeds outdoors in 12 in diameter hills, with 6-8 seeds per hill, after danger of frost has passed. Hills should be spaced 6' apart in all directions. Thin to 3-4 plants per hill.
- Transplant (recommended for shorter growing seasons i.e. Zones 3-4):
- Start indoors 3 to 4 weeks before transplanting out. Harden off. Transplant 12 to 18 inch in row, 16 to 24 in between rows.
- Approximately 45 days to maturity.
- Full sun; protected from strong winds
- The soil should be well drained and rich in humus, the more the better.
- For an early start (late Mar) place a single seed side ways 1/2 in deep in seed compost in a 3 inch pot.
- The critical part is temperature, these need at least 65F continuous soil temperature (preferably more to maximize germination rates) until germinated.
- Keep the soil moist – water copiously around the plants, not over them.
- Keep weed free to allow air circulation.
- Once the plants start to fruit, feed every 14 days with a tomato type fertilizer,
- these are greedy plants.
- Harvest at 5in to 6 in long
- Seed Count: 20
