Full Description

Dierama angeliae, commonly known as Angel’s Fishing Rod, is a graceful perennial grass prized for its delicate, arching flower spikes that resemble dangling fishing rods. Blooming in late spring to summer, each slender stem bears small, bell-shaped, pink to purple flowers that sway in the breeze, creating a soft, airy movement in the garden. This elegant ornamental is perfect for borders, meadows, and naturalistic plantings, and it attracts bees and butterflies. The plant forms clumps of fine, grass-like foliage, adding texture even when not in bloom.

While primarily ornamental, there are no widely known medicinal properties associated with Dierama angeliae. It is mainly valued for its aesthetic appeal and low-maintenance growth.

Full Growing Information From Seed:

  • Indoor Sowing: Start seeds 8–10 weeks before the last frost. Sow on the surface of a well-draining seed mix and lightly press into soil. Keep soil evenly moist and maintain temperatures around 18–21°C (65–70°F). Germination may take 3–6 weeks. Transplant seedlings carefully once they have established several leaves.
  • Outdoor Sowing: Sow seeds directly in prepared, well-drained soil in spring. Lightly press seeds into the soil and keep the area consistently moist. Seedlings will develop gradually and form clumps over time.

Dierama angeliae prefers well-drained soil and moderate watering while establishing. Once mature, it is drought tolerant and requires minimal maintenance. RC

Stratification:

Light cold stratification can improve germination but is not strictly required. Seeds can be refrigerated in slightly moist soil for 2–4 weeks before sowing or sown outdoors in early spring.
