Full Description
Scarlet Spire Larkspur (Delphinium consolida ‘Scarlet Spire’) is a striking annual wildflower producing tall, elegant flower spikes covered in vivid scarlet-red blooms. A classic cottage garden favorite, this larkspur adds strong vertical interest to flower beds, borders, and wildflower plantings. The finely cut, feathery foliage creates a soft texture that contrasts beautifully with the bold flower spikes.
Scarlet Spire is highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators. It is also excellent as a cut flower, with long-lasting blooms that bring height and color to floral arrangements.
This variety is fast-growing, easy to cultivate from seed, and thrives in cooler spring conditions, making it ideal for early-season colour.
Growing Information (from seed)
Sowing:
- Direct sow outdoors in early spring as soon as soil can be worked
- Can also be fall-sown in mild climates for earlier spring blooms
- Does not transplant well – direct sowing is recommended
Soil:
- Well-draining soil is essential
- Prefers moderately fertile soil
- Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils
Planting Depth:
- Sow seeds on the surface or lightly cover with 2–3 mm of soil
- Seeds need light to germinate
Spacing:
- Space plants 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) apart
Watering:
- Keep soil evenly moist during germination
- Once established, moderate watering is sufficient
- Avoid overwatering
Germination:
- 10–20 days under cool conditions
Care:
- Remove spent flowers to encourage extended blooming
- Tall plants may benefit from light staking in windy areas
- Low maintenance once established
Bloom Time:
- Late spring to mid-summer
Height:
- Approximately 60–100 cm (2–3 feet)
Stratification:
Not required, but cold stratification improves germination.
Optional method:
- Place seeds in moist paper towel inside a sealed bag
- Refrigerate for 7–14 days before sowing
This mimics natural winter conditions and can increase germination rates.
Medicinal Properties: Larkspur species are not used medicinally and are considered toxic.
Historically, larkspur was used externally as a natural insect repellent, but all parts of the plant are poisonous if ingested, to both humans and animals. It should be grown strictly as an ornamental flower.
