Red Dragonfruit, also known as Pitaya, is an exotic tropical cactus vine prized for its vivid red skin and richly coloured crimson flesh dotted with tiny black seeds. Botanically known as Hylocereus costaricensis, this unique fruiting cactus produces large, fragrant, night-blooming white flowers that add dramatic beauty to any growing space.

The fruit is refreshingly sweet with subtle berry-like notes and is highly valued for its nutritional content, including antioxidants, fiber, and essential vitamins. This fast-growing climbing cactus develops long, fleshy green stems and thrives when supported by a trellis or stake. Both ornamental and productive, Red Dragon Fruit is ideal for containers, greenhouses, or warm sheltered gardens, bringing a lush tropical feel wherever it grows.

Full Growing Information from Seed: 

  • Sow seeds indoors on the surface of a well-draining cactus or succulent soil mix
  • Lightly press seeds into soil; do not bury deeply (needs light to germinate)
  • Mist gently to keep soil consistently moist but not soggy
  • Maintain temperatures between 20–30°C (68–86°F)
  • Germination typically occurs within 1–3 weeks
  • Provide bright, indirect light during early growth
  • Gradually introduce seedlings to stronger sunlight as they mature
  • Transplant once seedlings are large enough to handle
  • Use a container or planting area with excellent drainage
  • Provide a trellis or support structure for climbing growth
  • Water moderately; allow soil to dry slightly between watering
  • Reduce watering during cooler or slower growth periods
  • Feed lightly with a balanced or cactus fertilizer during the growing season
  • Expect a longer maturity period; plants become more productive with age
  • May take up to three years to germinate
