Full description
Cockscomb Flamingo (Celosia spicata) is an elegant and eye-catching variety known for its tall, feathery plumes in soft shades of pink, rose, and silvery blush. Unlike the crested forms of Celosia cristata, this spicata type produces upright, wheat-like flower spikes that sway gracefully in the breeze, adding height and movement to garden beds and borders.
This variety is especially valued for its long blooming period and excellent performance in hot, dry conditions. The delicate-looking blooms are surprisingly resilient and retain their colour well, making them ideal for both fresh bouquets and dried floral arrangements. Flamingo celosia creates a soft, airy texture in the garden and pairs beautifully with other summer annuals. It is also attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Full Growing information from seed:
Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost, or sow directly outdoors once temperatures are consistently warm and all risk of frost has passed. Celosia requires warmth and light to germinate successfully.
To sow indoors:
- Use a fine, well-draining seed-starting mix
- Lightly press seeds onto the soil surface without covering, as they require light for germination
- Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy
- Maintain temperatures of 20–25°C (68–77°F)
- Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days
Once seedlings have developed several sets of true leaves, transplant them carefully and harden off before placing outdoors. Space plants about 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) apart to allow proper airflow.
To direct sow:
- Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil
- Gently press seeds into the soil surface and keep consistently moist until germination
Celosia spicata thrives in fertile, well-drained soil and benefits from regular watering, especially during dry periods. Avoid overwatering or poorly drained conditions. Deadheading is not necessary but may encourage continued blooming.

No stratification required
Medicinal properties:
Celosia spicata has a history of traditional use in herbal practices, particularly in tropical regions. The plant is known for its anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. It has been used in traditional medicine to help manage digestive issues, including diarrhea and intestinal discomfort. WD
Extracts from the plant have also been associated with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. In some traditions, parts of the plant are used to support wound healing and reduce inflammation. While these uses are rooted in traditional knowledge, Celosia spicata is primarily cultivated as an ornamental flower and should be used medicinally with proper understanding and caution.
