Full Description

Anagallis linifolia ‘Caerulea’, commonly known as Blue Pimpernel or Poor Man’s Weather Glass, is a charming low-growing flowering plant prized for its intensely vivid, sky-blue star-shaped blooms with golden yellow centers. The delicate, narrow, flax-like foliage forms a compact, spreading habit, making it ideal for borders, containers, rock gardens, and cottage-style plantings.

The nickname “Poor Man’s Weather Glass” comes from the plant’s unique habit of opening its flowers only in bright sunshine and closing them when clouds approach, rain is imminent, or in the evening—acting as a natural indicator of changing weather conditions.

This plant flowers continuously through the warmer months, producing an abundance of blooms that are highly attractive to pollinators, especially bees and beneficial insects. Blue Pimpernel adds a rare and striking true blue tone to the garden, a colour seldom found in flowering plants.

Despite its delicate appearance, Anagallis is easy to grow and performs well in well-drained soils with minimal maintenance.

Medicinal Properties:

Historically, plants in the Anagallis genus (particularly Anagallis arvensis, Scarlet Pimpernel) were used in traditional European herbal medicine for their antispasmodic, expectorant, and mild sedative properties. However, Anagallis linifolia is not commonly used in modern herbal medicine, and the genus contains compounds that can be toxic if ingested in large amounts.

Not recommended for internal medicinal use.

Primarily grown today as an ornamental flowering plant.
