Fringed Willowherb – Epilobium ciliatum – Non-GMO – Organically Grown – Medicinal Herb

Annual or Perennial: Short-lived Perennial (may behave as an annual in certain conditions)

Description:

Fringed Willowherb (Epilobium ciliatum) is a hardy, herbaceous plant known for its narrow, lance-shaped leaves and small, delicate pink to purplish flowers. As the name suggests, the stems and leaves often bear fine, soft hairs (fringes), which help distinguish it from other species in the willowherb family. This plant is highly adaptable and grows well in disturbed or moist areas, including roadsides, stream banks, and meadows. It supports pollinators and has a long history of medicinal use by Indigenous communities and herbalists.

Medicinal Properties:

Traditionally used for its anti-inflammatory and soothing properties. It has been employed in teas or topical applications to help with urinary tract issues, gastrointestinal inflammation, and skin irritations.

Light Requirements: Full sun to partial shade

Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained soil; tolerates a variety of conditions

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during germination and early growth

Planting Depth: Surface sow; do not cover seeds – they need light to germinate

Spacing: Thin to 6–12 inches apart after seedlings establish

Germination Time: 2–4 weeks

Stratification:

Cold stratification recommended. For best results, mimic natural winter conditions:

1. Mix seeds with moist sand or vermiculite in a sealed plastic bag

2. Refrigerate at 33–40°F (1–5°C) for 4–6 weeks

3. After stratification, surface sow indoors or directly in cool outdoor soil in early spring or fall

Seed Count: 25 Seeds

Note: Though a short-lived perennial, it may act like an annual in harsh climates. Deadheading or allowing self-seeding will encourage continual growth in the garden.
