Ruta - Common Rue ( Ruta graveolens) Herb Of Grace Evergreen Ornamental Herb

Perennial

Height 2 to 3 ft

Ruta graveolens, commonly known as rue, common rue or herb-of-grace, is a species of the genus Ruta, grown as an ornamental evergreen perennial herb native to the Balkan Peninsula.. It should be mulched heavily for winter in northern areas.

Rue is a medicinal plant widely used in the Mediterranean region to treat pain, dermatitis, rheumatism, and other inflammatory diseases, but its use is limited by its potential toxicity. It is typically grown throughout the world especially for its decorative bluish coloured leaves; tolerates hot and dry soil conditions - it grows well even in poor dry soils but needs well drained soil to thrive.

  • Full sun to sun
  • Well draining soil
  • Rue can be started indoors; usually germinates in one to four weeks. Rue seeds need light to germinate; be sure to surface sow seeds before setting them in a warm, sunny area. Seeds can typically be sown at 68 F for topical germination. Transplant outdoors when seedlings reach a few inches in height and the weather is warmer.
  • OR Direct seed in spring - sow 6 to 12 seeds per foot, 1/4 in to 3/8 in deep, in rows that are 18 in apart, and later to a final spacing of 12 to 24 in apart.
  • Keep well weeded until the plants are large enough to compete well with the weeds.
  • Seed Count: 15
