Lovage is the tallest of all garden herbs. Grow this highly ornamental and large stature plant as an accent in your borders and garden - especially when it flowers. Flowers are highly decorative, yellow and umbrella shaped umbels...perfect for beneficial pollinators to land on.
If celery is too difficult for you to grow plant Lovage; lovage is an umbelliferous plant in the family Apiaceae – the parsley family. It has a distinct celery-like flavour; roots can be eaten as a vegetable or grated into salads. Just snip fresh leaves and add to salads, soups, stews and dry leaves retain their flavour so you can keep a jar full around for winter cooking.
- Planting one or two plants will be ample.
- Recommend allowing the plants to bloom; flower heads are attractive to a wide range of predatory and beneficial insects. The flowers are followed by seeds that you can harvest and use as a spice with a similar taste to fennel seeds.
- Sow seeds 5mm (¼”) deep, three or four seeds per pot. Germination takes 10-14 days. Keep soil moist until they are established, and transplant out at least 60cm (24″) apart.
