Annual

Sicilian Rocket is an annual garden plant used as a salad green, and is most often called "rocket" in Britain, Australia and New Zealand. North Americans generally call it 'arugula'.  Sicilian Rocket aka arugula, is also called roquette, salad rocket, garden rocket, or rugula, annual herb of the mustard family (Brassicaceae), grown for its pungent edible leaves.

This variety of arugula from Sicily is very peppery and very delicious, with flavors of black pepper and citrus. It has deeply lobed green leaves that range in length between 3 and 7 inches, and each leaf has between four and 10 lobes.

The leaves are best harvested as salad greens when the plant is young and less than a foot tall. If left unharvested, the plant will eventually grow to a height up to 2 or 3 feet. Eventually, the plant will produce small, white cross-shaped flowers and will go to seed.

  • Harvest baby greens after 21 days, or allow plant to mature in 44 days.
  • Rocket needs to be kept well-watered, especially in hot and dry conditions, otherwise it can prematurely bolt. Water regularly to keep the soil moist and use an organic mulch like sugarcane or pea straw to help retain soil moisture.
  • Isolate by 1/2 mile from other flowering Arugula (Eruca sativa), to avoid unwanted cross-pollination.
  • Allow seed pods to turn brown and dry before seed harvest.
  • Protect from birds.
