Stratification (For Seed Starting):
1. Seed Stratification: Cosmos seeds do not require cold stratification and can be directly sown or started indoors.
2. Starting Indoors:
• Sow seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost date. Place seeds in small pots or seed trays, lightly covering them with soil.
• Keep the soil moist and place the pots in a warm location (70°F/21°C). Germination usually takes 7-14 days.
3. Direct Sowing: For direct sowing outdoors, wait until after the last frost has passed. Sprinkle seeds lightly over prepared soil and press them down gently. Keep the soil moist until germination occurs.
Maintenance:
• Deadheading: Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage continuous blooming. This will also prevent self-seeding.
• Pest/Disease Resistance: Apricot Cosmos are relatively pest-free, but they can attract aphids or slugs. Control with organic insecticidal soap or by handpicking.
Note: Apricot Cosmos are perfect for adding soft, warm color to garden beds, borders, or containers. Their delicate, apricot-hued flowers are highly attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies, making them a great choice for a wildlife-friendly garden. These plants are easy to grow and will bloom profusely throughout the summer and fall.
