Swamp Milkweed is Monarch food. Milkweed is not only a food source for Monarch’s but they are also a host plant for monarch eggs that are laid on the underside of the leaves. The larvae feed on the leaves after hatching, but cause no permanent damage to the plant.

• This perennial plant prefers warm soil for germination.
• Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the expected transplanting date or sow them directly in well-draining soil.
• Ensure the soil temperature is around 70°F (21°C) for optimal germination.
• This timing allows the milkweed to establish a robust root system before the growing season, supporting its growth and attracting butterflies with its vibrant flowers.
• Milkweed is a thick stemmed perennial that may be slow to start but will reward your patience with purple flowers that bloom from summer to fall; it also provides a habitat for traveling Monarch butterflies who will still enjoy even if it doesn’t flower the first year.
• Prefers a moist environment; great plant for wet meadows or rain gardens. Allow the Monarch butterfly larvae to munch all the leaves they want and watch them pupate. 
• Milkweed seed can be planted directly in soil, or started indoors. You can sow milkweed seeds by scattering them on the soil surface ¼ - 1/2 inch apart, and then cover them with about 1/4 inch of additional soil. Water the area frequently after planting until plants become established.
• Easy from seed with winter-sowing. Won't reliably re-seed in one area, since the fluffy seed heads travel long distances in the wind.
• Extremely hardy.
• Attracts butterflies (especially monarch butterflies) and hummingbirds
