Sedum - Two Row Stonecrop (Sedum spurium) Stone Like Groundcover
Perennial
Height 3 to 6 in
Two Row Stonecrop, otherwise known as Sedum, is part of the Crassulaceae family. Also known as Caucasian stonecrop because of its stone like appearance - growth in two rows along the stem. Sedum is a genus of flowering plants that also have the succulent characteristics of water storing leaves and stems, and is native to Iran and Turkey.
The genus' name derives from the Latin term sedere, to sit, exemplified by stonecrop's ability to attach itself to rocks, stone walls, and other areas with very little soil; it is an excellent choice for rock gardens, alpine gardens or small areas that require ground cover. Also great for fronts of borders, stone wall pockets, sunny banks and slopes to assist with erosion, edging and containers. Best when planted in groups or massed as a ground cover.
Two Row Stonecrop has star shaped pinkish red blooms from June to July.
- Full sun to part shade
- Dry to medium
- The best time to plant sedum is in the spring after the threat of frost has passed and before the heat of summer. Direct sow and water in lightly and continue to keep area moistened until seeds geminate.
- OR start seeds indoors 4 to 5 weeks prior to last frost. Place in small pots or flats and a sterile starter mix. Pre-moisten the starter mix and sow 5 to 7 seeds per container. Seeds are exceptionally small, so only press the seed into the moistened soil, and do not cover the seed. Cover with plastic wrap and keep the seeds moist but not saturated until they germinate. Keep temperature consistent between 65 to 72 F; lift plastic regularly and mist seeds until they germinate. Remove plastic upon germination and place in a sunny warm spot. Plant outdoors when seedlings have true leaves and are strong enough to handle.
- Germination: typically 14 to 28 days.
- Spacing: 12 to 15 in
- Harvest: harvest seeds from fall-blooming sedum can be sown the following spring, store in a cool dark place.
- Attracts butterflies
- Rabbit, deer, drought resistant
- Seed Count: 50
