Full Description

Dark Blue Aster ‘Pavlova’ is a striking annual flower prized for its rich, deep blue to violet blooms and elegant upright growth. The large, fully double flowers have densely layered petals that form rounded, chrysanthemum-like blossoms. Their vibrant color and long stems make them an excellent choice for cutting gardens, bouquets, and decorative borders.

Plants produce sturdy stems with lush green foliage and abundant blooms from midsummer through early fall. The bold dark blue flowers attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies while adding dramatic color to garden beds and flower arrangements.

Growing approximately 24–30 inches tall, Pavlova asters create a strong vertical accent in the garden and perform beautifully in cottage gardens, pollinator gardens, and traditional flower beds. Regular cutting encourages the plant to produce even more blooms throughout the season.

Medicinal Properties 

Callistephus chinensis is primarily grown as an ornamental flower and is not widely used medicinally in modern herbal practice. Some related plants in the aster family have been used in traditional herbal preparations for mild anti-inflammatory or soothing properties, but Pavlova asters are generally cultivated for their decorative value rather than medicinal use.

Full Growing Information From Seed

Starting Seeds Indoors 

  1. Start seeds 6–8 weeks before the last frost.
  2. Fill seed trays or small pots with a light, well-draining seed starting mix.
  3. Sow seeds on the soil surface and cover lightly with about 3 mm (⅛ inch) of soil.
  4. Gently water to moisten the soil without washing seeds away.
  5. Place in a bright location with good light.
  6. Maintain soil temperature around 18–21°C (65–70°F) for best germination.
  7. Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.

Seeds usually germinate in 7–14 days.

Once seedlings develop several true leaves, transplant them into larger pots or directly into the garden after frost risk has passed.

Direct Sowing Outdoors

  1. Choose a location with full sun and well-drained soil.
  2. Loosen the soil and remove weeds.
  3. Sow seeds ¼ inch deep and lightly cover with soil.
  4. Water gently to settle the soil.
  5. Keep soil lightly moist until seedlings appear.

Thin plants to 10–12 inches apart to allow good air circulation and healthy growth.  V
