Full Description:

Flamingo / Apricot Aster is a beautiful China Aster variety prized for its soft, romantic coloring and large, chrysanthemum-like blooms. The flowers display warm apricot, peach, and soft salmon tones that sometimes deepen toward the center, creating a gentle gradient of color. The fully double blooms are densely packed with delicate petals that form lush, rounded flowers with a refined and elegant appearance.

Plants grow upright with strong stems and lush green foliage, typically producing abundant blooms from mid-summer through early autumn. These asters are especially popular in cut flower gardens due to their long stems, impressive flower size, and excellent vase life. Their warm pastel tones blend beautifully with cottage garden plantings and floral arrangements.

Flamingo / Apricot asters attract beneficial pollinators such as bees and butterflies, helping support a lively garden ecosystem. Their soft colors make them especially desirable for romantic garden designs, pastel-themed flower beds, and bouquet production.

While primarily cultivated as an ornamental flower, the species Callistephus chinensis has been referenced historically in traditional herbal practices in Asia, where related asters were sometimes used in mild herbal preparations for cooling and anti-inflammatory purposes. Growing Information from Seed:

Seeds can be started indoors or directly sown outdoors once the soil has warmed.

Indoor Sowing:

  • Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost.
  • Use a well-draining seed starting mix.
  • Sow seeds about 3 mm (1/8 inch) deep.
  • Lightly cover with soil and gently firm.
  • Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy.
  • Ideal germination temperature: 18–22°C (65–72°F).
  • Germination usually occurs within 7–14 days.

Once seedlings develop several true leaves, transplant into larger containers if necessary and provide strong light.

Transplanting Outdoors:

  • Harden off seedlings for about 7–10 days before planting outdoors.
  • Space plants approximately 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) apart.
  • Plant in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost. 

Direct Sowing Outdoors:

  • Sow after danger of frost has passed.
  • Plant seeds about 3 mm (1/8 inch) deep.
  • Thin seedlings to proper spacing once established.

Care:

  • Water regularly, keeping soil moderately moist.
  • Avoid watering foliage late in the day to help prevent disease.
  • Deadhead spent flowers to encourage more blooms.
  • Taller plants may benefit from staking in windy areas.
